Book Reviews Return

We’re well aware of the fact that leaders in every field of endeavor find a way to read. If they can’t find the time to physically sit and turn the pages of an actual book, they’ll listen to a CD, utilize their Kindle on an airplane, or browse an Executive Book Summary.

As time restraints and busy schedules increase, it’s very easy to simply stop reading. Successful people know this is not an acceptable alternative. Stop reading and you stop learning. Stop learning and you stop growing. Stop growing and you lose your competitive edge. While this is a Universal Truth which cannot be denied, many people have actually reduced their reading time or simply eliminated reading altogether. Let’s hope they realize the error of their ways before they suffer the consequences of that choice.

For years now, we have provided book reviews for our clients and blog subscribers in hopes of assisting them in choosing the authors and content which may best service their needs. As we approached 200 book reviews, we were forced to create an entirely new format dedicated exclusively to this section.

Creating this new book reviews format turned out to be a much greater challenge than first anticipated. In fact, it took a full six months to complete. Melanie L. Drake, who focuses on the publishing and marketing sides of our business, has done a fine job of creating a much more reader-friendly format, offering many more benefits. Not only can you now view more than 200 book reviews but you can now also:

  • Find book reviews on a specific topic.
  • Comment on book reviews.
  • Search for book reviews.
  • E-mail a book review.
  • Share a book review with friends.
  • Share a book review on Facebook and Twitter.
  • Subscribe to the RSS feed.
  • Subscribe to the book reviews mailing list.

You can find the new book reviews section on the AchieveMax® website at http://www.AchieveMax.com/bookreviews/ or simply go to our blog page and click on Book Reviews in the column on the right-hand side of the page. You’ll find more than 200 reviews divided into the following categories for your convenience.

Our first book review in this new format is now available. The strong influence of the Social Media wave has grown from being primarily a pastime for kids and teens to becoming a major influence in today’s competitive business world.

For this reason, we’ve chosen this category for our first review in our new format. A book review of Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Social Media, but were afraid to ask … by Hilary JM Topper, MPA, is now available in our new book review section.

Take a look and learn how to build your business and personal knowledge by using consumer-generated media. In this intriguing book, the author provides some insight into a host of various web sites … many you have probably never heard of. She describes each site and, based on a great deal of research, shares the pros and cons of each as well as techniques to best tap the full potential of every site.

Should Holiday Savings Be on Your Christmas List?

Everyone is getting a jump on the holidays this year. While most people once waited for Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving and the busiest shopping day of the year), this year is noticeably different. Most retailers have decided to offer those bargain prices much earlier this year. They’re obviously concerned about the depressed economy and projected shortfall as we approach the end of this year. Even car dealerships are jumping on this band wagon which provides a strong indication of poor sales expectations in this unprecedented economy. I’ve seen “Black Saturday” promotions and even a “Every day is Black Friday” promotion appearing on TV and in newspapers. Look for that to continue.

We’ve experienced the same challenges ourselves this year. Yes, it seems as though we’re being programmed to shop earlier and earlier every year for fear that we may forfeit value, price or selection by hesitating too long to plan. We’ve recognized that same phenomenon over the past few years as our clients are shopping early for their holiday banquets and parties, award ceremonies, annual recognition programs and Christmas parties.

Exposure of a Hidden Asset

It was two years ago that we published our first blog article. Our opening paragraph read:

Welcome to the AchieveMax® Blog … the blog created to provide you with the latest buzz from the business world in addition to a constant offering of C.A.N.I. (Continuous And Never-ending Improvement) tips, tools, and strategies.

We created the blog at the request of many clients who wanted access to more of the kind of information they were finding in our seminars and keynote presentations. We were more than pleased to accommodate those requests.

However, prior to that cold December two years ago, I thought a blog was something that happened to your sink which required the services of a plumber.

Melanie L. Drake focuses on the publishing and marketing sides of the AchieveMax® company.Enter Melanie Drake … a very talented and experienced webmaster and AchieveMax® Vice President, boasting more than 15 years of web marketing, graphic design and blog development. During her career, Melanie has served as editor of various publications, such as the Michigan Times and Kwasind literary magazine. She is also the past Director of Publications of the Mid-Michigan Chapter of the American Society of Training and Development (ASTD). Melanie is currently the editor and designer of the articles on the AchieveMax® blog. In short, she makes it all come together.

In two short years, we have produced close to 450 articles in 19 various categories and are currently approaching 200 book reviews on our web site.

I share all of this for several reasons.

  1. To introduce Melanie to our rapidly growing audience of readers.
  2. To thank her for a tremendous contribution that has provided our readers with a great deal of information which they obviously appreciate and support. Considering that she has been on maternity leave, it took a good deal of planning for the blog to continue seamlessly for our readers while she has been away.
  3. To encourage our many readers to expose themselves to a somewhat unknown benefit of our blog. I mentioned the appreciation and support of our readers not as an assumption but as a result of the feedback we’ve received from coast to coast in the U.S. and from many others worldwide.
  4. The unknown benefit I mentioned is easily overlooked even though it’s readily available to everyone. After each article on the blog, you’ll see the word “Comments.” Click on this link and you’ll find a very simple form which enables you to make a comment concerning content or ask any questions you may have about the articles.  If there is a number such as “(2)” after the word “Comments,” you’ll know that two readers have shared their thoughts or asked a question about that particular article.

Example of Blog Comments

I encourage you to investigate these comments as I am constantly amazed and impressed by the experience, intelligence, and observations of our readers. I have found their comments to be very informative, humorous, and revealing and am certain you will as well.

If you’re interested in reading all of the comments, simply click on the “Comments” link in the upper right corner of the opening blog page.

Of course, we also encourage YOU to continue to share your thoughts and opinions with us as often as you feel the urge to do so.

Finally, we thank you for your continued support, response, and participation in our efforts to keep you informed, educated and entertained.

Generational Gems for Future Leaders Emerges as a Keynote Presentation Offering

Since the initial introduction of our blog, the “Generational Gems for Future Leaders” category has been a reader favorite.

We created this feature with the hope and purpose of making certain future generations have access to the wonderful lessons, anecdotes, allegories, parables, and narratives that we experienced and enjoyed over the decades. Anyone in business for any substantial length of time has had the benefit and privilege to hear words of wisdom from some of the greatest leaders, writers, consultants, speakers and authors in the world.

We were originally targeting high school and college audiences with these Gems but have been pleasantly surprised to find that they have been warmly accepted by many adults in new leadership roles and even by those who heard them years ago and are reminded of their impact once again.

In fact, many of our clients have shared appropriate Gems with their staff as part of their in-service training sessions while others are reprinting the Gems in their newsletters. These precious stories certainly drive home critical lessons we all need to hear and/or be reminded of. We have high schools printing them in their newspapers, teachers sharing them with their classes, and have even had a church print several of them in its newsletter.

As a result of this very positive acceptance, we have added Generational Gems for Future Leaders to our list of keynote presentations. Although we can’t possibly share them all with every audience, we can certainly present a fitting combination of Gems tailored to each client and time allotment based on the results of our initial telephone consultation.

Share a blend of the following Gems with your students, staff, or clients: The Bridge Builder, The Guy in the Glass, Acres of Diamonds, Priming the Pump, The 4-Minute Miles, Magic Marbles, The Struggle of the Butterfly, Kindergarten Kandor, Dismount the Dead Horse, The Monk and the Travelers, Grandma’s Cake of Life, The Ham and the Pan, The Parable of the Pebbles, The Star Thrower and many others. The keynote presentation will consist of sharing a number of Gems complete with discussion on bridging each with daily challenges and opportunities.

We owe it to future generations to share the wisdom that has passed the test of time and inspired generations of those engaged in the pursuit of career success.  If you’d like more information on our newest leadership keynote presentation, please visit the Generational Gems for Future Leaders keynote presentation description. If you’d like to review the Gems we’ve shared thus far, simply follow this link to see the entire list.

Is Leadership on your Christmas List?

Life is often ironic. I’m sitting at my computer looking out my window at the scenic fall vista we’re currently blessed with. Gentle warm breezes caress the trees as the bright autumn sun reflects off the glassy surface of the lake like sapphires. Days like this were made for strolling through the silent woods as your mind wanders endlessly. It’s sometimes difficult to concentrate with a view like this, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world. It’s very calming after a week of airports and conference centers. I obviously digress.

The irony arises in the fact that ten miles from this tranquil autumn scene you can walk into Walmart, Target, Hobby Lobby or the mall and find yourself suddenly surrounded by aisle after aisle of Christmas decorations! Should this be your first trip, allow me to direct you to this Winter Wonderland. You’ll find it situated just past the Thanksgiving aisle, which immediately follows the Halloween merchandise.

Professional Speaker Harry K. Jones Quoted in Recent Credit Union Publications

Professional speaker Harry K. Jones was recently quoted in two credit union publications, the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) News and Credit Union Times.

The Credit Union National Association News article, “Mid-America CU Association Hosts its First Idea Institute,” discusses Harry’s recent presentation to the Mid-America Credit Union Association entitled “Blue Jeans and Tennis Shoes: Using Out-of-the-Box Thinking.” The article states:

AchieveMax®, Inc. consultant, speaker and facilitator Harry Jones challenged attendees to take a different look at things by reframing, closing the knowing/doing gap and adjusting their sails.

“Today’s typical member wants only two things,” he said. “They want good feelings and solutions to problems. As credit unions, that is what you were built on.” To give members what they want, credit unions must create a culture to attract good people, work as a team, and continually improve, he said.

The Credit Union Times article, “On-Site Coverage: Create a Purpose for your CU that Everyone Knows, Understands, and Lives By,” includes information on Harry’s recent presentation, “Productive Chaos: Riding the Wave of Change,” for the Maryland & District of Columbia Credit Union Association:

Be sure staff knows your credit union’s purpose and can articulate it in their own words, Harry Jones advised attendees of the MDDCCUA Annual Conference here today.

Then ensure there are shared values in reaching that purpose with buy-in from everyone in the organization, board of directors to the teller line. Without aligning everyone’s goals, a credit union will have a hard time achieving them.

Part of the chaos is just normal change. “There’s been a lot of change out there. Your members have changed, their business has changed, their needs have changed, their expectations have changed,” he noted. Has your credit union is the critical question.

Both articles are available in full at the links above.
