Are You Ready for Some “CHAOS”?

Business BriefsI throw out that challenge in much the same way Hank Williams Jr. invites people to join him for Monday Night Football. The difference is simple — his viewers have a choice as to whether they participate.

If you haven’t noticed, CHAOS has not only arrived, it’s been here for a while now, and it doesn’t appear to have any intention of diminishing its intensity.

Glance at a recent national newspaper or magazine, and you’ll quickly discover CHAOS in nearly every aspect of our lives … the economy, politics, sports, entertainment, health care, business, education, and even family life. What in the world’s going on? Why so much unexplainable CHAOS in so many different areas at the same time for no justifiable reason? Is it contagious?

In one newspaper today, I found the following examples of CHAOS:

Let’s start with an eye-opener. A B-52 bomber, one of OURS, was mistakenly armed with six nuclear warheads and flown for more than three hours across several states last week, prompting an investigation and the firing of at least one commander. Tell me, how do you load SIX Advanced Cruise Missiles onto a B-52 without someone saying: ”Uh, excuse me! Are you sure we’re supposed to be doing this?”

Apple CEO Steve Jobs issued an apology and $100 credits to the multitudes of loyal customers who stood in line for hours and shelled out $599 for the most advanced model of the iPhone. He did so because they just slashed the price by $200! Credits must be used in Apple retail and online stores. When asked why they suddenly slashed the price by such a large amount so soon after its initial release, he simply replied: “That’s what happens in technology.” Guess who won’t be standing in line with a handful of money for the next release? By the way, they’ve already sold over a million iPhone and are projecting 10 million sales within the first year.

In a move that shocked the auto industry, Jim Press, Toyota Motor Corporation’s North American president, was named president and vice chairman of Chrysler LLC — titles he will share with one-time Chrysler Chief Executive Officer Tom LaSorda. It is the second time in the past month that Chrysler, under new ownership, has lured a senior executive from Toyota. Press, 60, spent 37 years at Toyota, most recently as the president and chief operating officer of Toyota Motor North America, the holding company responsible for Toyota’s North American sales, engineering and manufacturing units. You can expect to see some major changes coming out of Detroit in the very near future. Press was reportedly given an unbelievable pay and benefit package to make the move to Chrysler. You can bet expectations were equally as high. Watch for Union reaction to those changes. You can bet GM and Ford will be watching closely. This particular move could mean life or death for Detroit as we know it!

To add to Michigan’s woes, Volkswagen announced plans to relocate its headquarters from the Detroit area to Northern Virginia.

Fliers in the past month filed more complaints with the Department of Transportation about airline service than for any other month in the last SEVEN years!

Mattel announces its THIRD recall of Chinese-made toys that have excessive amounts of lead paint. This time they’re recalling 700,000 toys. This couldn’t happen at a worse time for the world’s leading toy maker. They’re focusing their time, money and resources recalling product at a time when they would usually be stocking stores for the upcoming Christmas season. You know, the season that begins a month before Halloween!

Here’s another shocker. Southwest Airlines, long known for their low prices, recently triggered the nation’s latest fare hikes. They cited higher fuel costs, which obviously affects all airlines. Therefore, you can expect to see additional price increases across the industry in the coming weeks.

Four of the nation’s largest microwave-popcorn makers are working to remove a flavoring chemical from their products because it could be linked to a rare life threatening disease often called “popcorn lung.” You couldn’t make up a story like that.

Have you watched any of the Democratic or Republican television debates? Based on what I’ve seen and heard, you can expect a lot more CHAOS between now and Election Day!

Our “Productive Chaos” program emphasizes the fact that CHAOS has been with us a while now, is not about to go away, and will, more than likely, increase in intensity while presenting itself in new and challenging ways in the months to come. For these critical reasons, we examine various strategies used by organizations from many industries as they attempt to adjust to growing challenges. It’s indeed comforting to note that this has been our most requested seminar topic. Obviously, many organizations have recognized the need to prepare for future challenges.

The cold, harsh reality is quite evident. We, as organizations and individuals, will become either victims or benefactors of the ensuing CHAOS. The choice is ours. Are we prepared to deal with the challenges? Are we providing the tools, strategies, training and experience needed to cope with the changes and resulting confusion that awaits us? Do we view CHAOS as a challenge or an opportunity? Can we actually benefit from the CHAOS by assisting others who are less prepared? Leadership in any organization should certainly be discussing this matter while there is still time to prepare. Think about it. Talk about it. Do something about it.

What Goes Around, Comes Around

Motivational speaker Harry K. Jones has appeared all over North America addressing topics such as change, customer service, creativity, employee retention, goal setting, leadership, stress management, teamwork and time management.Apparently, we can all use a lift now and then. I’ve been getting some very favorable feedback concerning our new “Need A Lift” blog category. I guess it’s nice to have a resource we know we can always count on to find a little inspiration when we’re having a tough week, a long day or even a challenging moment now and then. So here’s another little story, based partially on fact, that we hope may bring a smile to your face or at least a moment of inspiration into your busy life. If it works for you, please pass it on.

One day, a poor boy who was selling goods from door to door to work his way through school found he had only one thin dime left, and he was hungry. He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal, he requested a drink of water.

She thought he looked hungry so she brought him a large, cool glass of milk. He drank it slowly and then asked, “How much do I owe you?”

“You don’t owe me anything,” she replied. “Mother has taught us never to accept pay for kindness.”

He said, “Thank you from my heart!” As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but his faith in a greater power and his fellow man was strong as well. He had been just about ready to give up and quit.

Years later that young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city where they called in specialists to study her rare disease.

Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately he rose and went down the hall of the hospital to her room. Dressed in his doctor’s gown, he went in to see her. He recognized her at once. He went back to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her life. From that day on, he gave special attention to the case.

After a long struggle, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it, then wrote something on the edge, and the bill was sent to her room. She feared to open it, for she was certain it would take the rest of her life to pay for it all.

Finally, she gathered enough nerve to open the envelope and something immediately caught her attention on the side of the bill. She read these words:

“Paid in full with one glass of milk.”
Dr. Howard Kelly

Beginner Business Blog: Top Webmaster Plugins for Your WordPress Business Blog

web marketing and communications consultant Melanie L. DrakeAfter installing WordPress to your server, you’re probably ready to start blogging away.  However, before you write your first article, you’ll want to look at some WordPress plugins, which are tools to extend the functionality of WordPress. Plugins allow you to customize your site based on your specific needs.

The following six plugins will help you as a webmaster to keep your site running smoothly. The next article in this series will discuss a number of plugins to help your readers enjoy your site.

1. Akismet

When I originally set up the blog, I chose to make everyone register to post a comment, thinking that alone would stop spam comments. Unfortunately, the spam comments came in immediately, and it was becoming increasingly time consuming to read through 100 spam comments a day.

I ended up adding the plugin for Akismet, which checks your comments against the Akismet web service to see if they look like spam or not. Since Akismet is installed with WordPress, all you need to do is enable it and get a wordpress.com API key to use it. You can review the spam it catches under the “Comments” tab in your control panel. Akismet has found more than 30,000 blog comment spam since it was installed about six months ago. That’s an average of 5,000 spam comments a month or 167 comments a day.

2. Math Comment Spam Protection

Although Akismet separates real comments from spam comments, it still allows all comments through for you to view and then delete. As a result, I added the Math Comment Spam Protection plugin, and it has cut down on the amount of spam comments I receive to just a few a week. This plugin asks the visitor making the comment to answer a simple math question, which helps prove that the visitor is a human being and not a spam robot. You can see this plugin in action down by the comment field of this article.

3. Simple Trackback Validation

The Simple Trackback Validation plugin eliminates spam trackbacks by first checking if the IP address of the trackback sender is equal to the IP address of the webserver the trackback URL is referring to and second by retrieving the web page located at the URL used in the trackback and checking if the page contains a link to your blog. Since adding this plugin and the Math Comment Spam Protection plugin, my spam level has dropped to only a few messages a day. This plugin works with Akismet so you can still look through the trackbacks before deleting them.

4. Widgets

When I first started using WordPress, it was frustrating to have to edit the code by hand in order to get the sidebar set up the way I wanted it. After I had everything set up the way I wanted it, I found the Widgets plugin, which allows you to move things (widgets) around, in and out of your sidebar. A widget is something that you might want on your sidebar, such as a category list, recent posts, recent comments, a calendar, links or search. No coding is involved, and you can drag each section to put it in the order you’d like. There is the additional functionality that you can create your own text widget with html. I was hesitant to try it since I had already spent quite a bit of time hand coding the sidebar file, but after trying it, I would strongly recommend it. (As of version 2.2 of WordPress, Widgets are automatically loaded with your WordPress installation.)

5. SEO Title Tag

The SEO Title Tag allows you to define a custom title tag for your home page, and you can put the blog title after the article title or not at all.  For example, Harry’s article on leadership lessons originally had the title: AchieveMax® Blog » Leadership Lessons We MUST Pass On.  It’s now customized to have the title and and blog name, in that order, for the title: Leadership Lessons We MUST Pass On » AchieveMax® Motivational Speakers Blog. You can also replace your blog name with a shorter blog nickname. Moreover, this plugin allows you to create a customized title tag for any post, static page, or category page.

6. Another WordPress Meta Plugin

Call me crazy, but I like to have complete sentences with a description of the page when I do a search. I was happy to find Another WordPress Meta Plugin, a plugin for inserting the META tags keywords and description into your posts, pages and index page. For example, with the article I wrote on wedding project management, the description is in a sentence and goes to the heart of story: Here are five tips for wedding project management. Without the META tags, the description would be: Because of this description, we often see searches for “wedding project management” in our web statistics. Having recently planned a wedding, … Of course, whether you have a META description or not, the description shown in the search results will depend on the search keyword.
