Recession Aggression

trainingRecently, I facilitated the first session of a year-long leadership series for one of the largest financial institutions in the state of Michigan. The program was designed for participation by both senior executive members and the entire supervisory staff … in their quest to establish a cohesive leadership team.

We’ve enjoyed a very productive 16-year relationship with this client and have truly enjoyed watching them grow and thrive over the years. It’s been both a pleasure and a privilege to have contributed to that successful evolution.

The decision to conduct a leadership training series at a time when most organizations would choose to diminish such employee education due to nationwide economic pressures is just one of many reasons why this organization continues to grow and flourish.

And so it is with all of those who set organizational goals, create a strategy to attain those goals, align their staff accordingly, view appropriate training as an investment rather than a cost, maintain focus and consistently re-frame their strategy when necessary.

Regardless of the industry, private sector or public sector, regardless of product, service, location or size, you’ll always discover organizations like this enjoying productivity, growth, and success while competitors with less determination and vision continue to struggle and fail.

I don’t understand why these successful cultures aren’t benchmarked by those less fortunate that are struggling with the significant challenges and uncertainties of today’s chaotic economic environment.

Reading Is Newest Category for Words of Wisdom

Words of WisdomOur 24th “Words of Wisdom” category emerges as we focus on a critical subject that few take seriously in today’s chaotic environment. Click on “Words of Wisdom“ - Reading to visit our web site to read what some of the greatest minds in our history had to say about the importance of reading. You might want to share a few of these thoughts with others who may be interested. You’ll all benefit from the investment of just a few moments.

Why reading? In this election year, we have been overwhelmed by the number of major issues revealed to have a major impact on our economy and, in turn, our standard of living in the United States. Global competition has certainly been one of those many issues.

We often feel that many of these critical issues are beyond our control as individuals. As global competition increases, we are required to learn at an accelerated rate … more than ever before. With that in mind, read the following facts in hopes of understanding how we can all contribute to solving a rapidly growing problem in this country.

  • 58% of high school graduates never read another book for the rest of their lives, according to the U.S. Department of Education.
  • The average American reads only one book of any kind per year.
  • Only 14% of our society visits a book store or library per year.
  • 42% of college graduates never read another book after college.
  • 80% of U.S. families did not buy or read a book last year.
  • 70% of U.S. adults have not been in a bookstore in the last five years.
  • 57% of new books are not read to completion.
  • Nearly half of America’s adults are poor readers, or “functionally illiterate.” They can’t carry out simple tasks like balancing check books, reading drug labels or writing essays for a job.
  • One-third of 500,000 = 22? There are almost half a million words in our English Language—the largest language on earth, incidentally—but a third of all our writing is made up of only 22 words, according to Paul Kropp’s The Reading Solution.
  • 50% of American adults are unable to read an eighth grade level book, according to Jonathan Kozol’s Illiterate America.
  • Out-of-school reading habits of students have shown that even 15 minutes a day of independent reading can expose students to more than a million words of text in a year, according to Anderson, Wilson, & Fielding.
  • The educational careers of 25% to 40% of American children are imperiled because they don’t read well enough, quickly enough, or easily enough, according to the Committee on Preventing Reading Difficulties in Young Children of the National Research Council.
  • 54% of all teachers have limited English proficient (LEP) students in their classrooms, yet only one-fifth of teachers feel very prepared to serve them, according to Richard Riley, former Secretary of Education.
  • Since 1983, more than 15 million Americans reached the 12th grade without having learned to read at a basic level. In the same period, more than 6 million Americans dropped out of high school altogether, according to the U.S. Department of Education.
  • 27 million Americans can’t read at all, 48 million are marginally illiterate and one-fifth of high school graduates can’t read their diplomas, according to the Department of Justice.
  • 52 million adults in the U.S. can’t read well enough to read a simple story to a child, according to the U.S. Department of Education.
  • It is estimated that the cost of illiteracy to business and the taxpayer is $20 billion per year, according to the United Way’s “Illiteracy: A National Crisis.”
  • More than 25% of adults read at or below a fifth-grade level—far below the level needed to earn a living wage, according to the National Institute for Literacy.
  • When the State of Arizona projects how many prison beds it will need, it factors in the number of kids who read well in fourth grade, according to the Arizona Republic.

Even though we don’t realize it, the majority of us waste a great deal of time every day! If you would track your movements every day for a week, you would discover that you’re easily wasting at least an hour a day. If that wasted hour per day were to be invested into reading a book, even the average reader would complete one book per week. That’s 52 books per year. In ten years, you will have read more than 500 books while the average American will have read only 10 books … if that many. These are the people you’re competing with. Who do you think has the better chance of being successful in their chosen field?

Also feel free to check out our in-depth offering of quotes on many subjects should you be in need of a refreshing thought, idea, slogan or profound nugget for an upcoming meeting, presentation, or lunch room bulletin board.

We offer interesting quotes on the subjects of leadership, teamwork, customer service, time management, goals, change, motivation, sales, potential, gender, creativity, repetition, enthusiasm, employees, attitude, networking, fear, sense of urgency, passion, empowerment, women, persistence, chaos, and now reading.

Stuck in a Rut

Generational Gems for Future LeadersChange seems to be the buzzword of the year. You hear it from everyone—politicians, business leaders, and the media at every turn. While everyone does an exceptional job of talking change, it’s going to be interesting to see how they do at walking it. For the first time in many years, outcomes are suddenly critical to success and in many cases, survival.

As a result of that momentous challenge, everyone seems to be running around like a head with their chicken cut off! Everyone appears to be on the move. However, being busy doesn’t exactly insure progress or accomplishment. Activity alone clearly isn’t enough.

John Henry Fabre, a French naturalist, conducted an experiment which certainly proves this fact. He filled a flowerpot with dirt and arranged some processionary caterpillars in a circle around the rim of the flowerpot. These caterpillars blindly follow the one in front of them. Hence, the name. In the center of the flowerpot he put pine needles, which is the favorite food of the processionary caterpillar. The caterpillars walked around the rim of the flowerpot hour after hour, day after day, night after night. No nourishment, no rest! They dropped dead of starvation and exhaustion; and all the food they needed was just inches away! They failed to take care of what was important. And in the process they accomplished nothing meaningful, nothing lasting. The caterpillars mistook activity for accomplishment. They meant well but failed to distinguish between exertion and purpose.

Generational Gems for Future LeadersMany people and organizations make the same mistake. As a result, they accomplish only a fraction of what they’re capable of. Many of them do what they do simply because it’s always been down that way. Today’s challenges require more.

True achievers must set daily, productive action goals that are results-oriented. Convince an entire team to do this, and you’ll start seeing positive results very quickly. This focused effort soon becomes a habit—one which leads to the success you seek.

Stop Talking – Take Action!

Midnight MusesWould you like some cheese with that whine?

I’m going to get some flak for this article, but that’s okay. That’s one of the great things about living in this country—we can say what we feel, regardless of what others may think.

Thirty presidential candidates spent months running for office. While telling everyone what they would do if elected President, they were doing absolutely nothing to deal with the many critical challenges facing this country at the moment. While that is indeed sad, there are others, on both sides of the aisle, that could have been addressing some of these issues but have obviously chosen not to.

In the spirit of an old-fashioned high school civics class … were you aware of the fact that we, you and I, elected a total of 535 politicians to go to Washington D.C. for the sole purpose of R-E-P-R-E-S-E-N-T-I-N-G our best interests? That’s right … 100 Senators (2 from each state) in Congress and 435 voting Representatives in the House. They work for us! What have they been doing for the past year? By the way, this is NOT a Republican or Democrat issue. They have proven to be equally worthless. This is a leadership issue … one that had better be dealt with in the near future!

Take a look at the following list. Don’t let me influence you in any way. Browse the list of current issues and see how many have been solved or even improved upon in the past year … keeping in mind that this is what those politicians were sent to Washington to accomplish.

  • Oil prices
  • Food prices
  • Current National Debt
  • Immigration issue
  • Mortgage crisis
  • Military costs
  • Healthcare crisis
  • Civil rights
  • Homeland security
  • Tax credits
  • Crime
  • Drugs
  • Education
  • Environment
  • Trade balance
  • Pork barrel spending
  • Foreign policy
  • Gun control
  • Jobs
  • Social Security
  • Welfare and poverty
  • Tax reform

Happy with the results? Thought not. However, anyone can complain about these things like I’m doing. In fact, everyone does. All of those politicians complain when giving their speeches. They simply do nothing about it. Television commentators from both liberal and conservative stations make a fortune complaining about these issues while pointing out who’s to blame … but they speak little or nothing about what to do about it.

Let me ask you this. If you owned your own business and these non-performing politicians were on your payroll, would you continue to increase their pay? Would you even keep them on your payroll? Well, these politicians DO work for you. They DO continue to vote themselves raises. And you haven’t fired them. But you can! And you should, if things don’t change. Let’s STOP talking about these things and DEMAND the LEADERSHIP this country deserves.

It’s actually very simple.

Go to Congress.org, and you’ll see a box which reads:

My Elected Officials
Find and contact your federal, state, and local officials.
Enter Zip Code _______

Enter your zip code, click on GO and you’ll be taken to a page listing your Senators and Representatives.
Under each name, click on Send them a Message.

You’ll be taken to a page that gives you a list of issues. You can click on any one of them OR click on Compose Your Own Message.

You’ll be taken to a page where you can compose your letter and send it to whomever you choose. Don’t let me influence you as to your area of displeasure. Browse that list above again and speak your own mind.
Do us all a major favor. Send your message informing him/her that if you don’t start seeing action from them in YOUR area of concern that you will definitely vote against them in the next election and urge everyone you know to do the same.

Then actually walk the talk by encouraging others to do the same. Hold these politicians (Republicans, Democrats and Independents) to their many promises while demanding the leadership we deserve. If we don’t demand it, we’ll regret it later. Let us, as voters, demonstrate the leadership we seek by exhibiting leadership ourselves. Make a difference today!

Opportunity in Crisis

Out-of-the-Box ThinkingThere’s a certain genre of unique people in the world today who seek and discover rare opportunities in the growing crisis we find around us. They possess a rare quality that seems to shield negativity as they search for possibilities.

For instance, this summer many parts of the country experienced an unusual “perfect storm”—a combination of brutal drought resulting in countless, unattractive brown lawns AND a national home foreclosure-plight unequaled in our memory. This combination is obviously not conducive to home sales in today’s marketplace.

But wait—creative minds reign supreme and not a minute too soon. For years lawn services have injected lawns with water-absorbing polymer pellets while others have resorted to pouring beer and soda across the lawn to keep yards green. And now … the most obvious of solutions. Why not simply spray paint your lawn?

A California-based chemical company is now selling a water-based spray-on paint that doesn’t harm the grass and wears off after about a month. Sales have jumped about 35% in the past month.

Green GrassWorkers armed with sprayers resembling an astronaut jet pack paint lawns with a turf colorant traditionally used by golf courses and athletic stadiums. Lawn painting provides an instant curb appeal adding much-needed value for property owners.

Lawn service companies are now pitching this service to home owners and real estate agencies across the country. While it appears to be somewhat of a quick fix until water restrictions are lifted, it’s obviously solving problems for home owners, city officials, realtors, and lawn companies that have also experienced a slow down in tough economic times.

Connect the Dots for Success

Generational Gems for Future LeadersVisualize your first trip to a new shopping mall. If you want to locate a particular store, you usually make your way to one of those large directory maps that shows the location of every store in the complex. And what do you do once you locate your chosen destination? You’re still missing one essential piece of information … that little red dot accompanied by those three crucial words: YOU ARE HERE!

The best map in the world is worthless and can’t possibly help you reach your destination if you have no idea where you are at the moment. Leaders must also recognize this basic principle as they develop their employees. It’s imperative to provide goals for your people—to show them where they need to go to achieve the success they desire.

However, for a variety of reasons, we often forget to make certain they know where they are right now in such consequential areas as experience, education, training, resources, etc. The need for explicit communication at this point of their development can mean the difference between future success and failure for the individual as well as the organization.

Each employee must know where they are, where they need to be, and how to get from one dot to the other. Are you doing your part in helping them connect the dots?

Dazzling December

DecemberWell, it’s finally here … the end of the year. And what a year it’s been. Most everyone is glad to send this particular year into the history books in the hopes that 2009 will hold much more promise for everyone. The election is over, we have a new President, and everyone is cautiously watching the new administration and Congress in anticipation of hopeful strategies.

In the northern half of the world, winter officially begins on the 21st, and most of December is usually warmer than other winter months. Christmas trees are emerging across the country and the predictions are strong that we’ll see some fantastic holiday “sales” this year in light of the economy. Shopping malls are already becoming “chaotic” and alcohol-fueled holiday parties are filling the calendar.

The journey to Christmas and beyond to the New Year will be swift and frenzied … hopefully leading us to a more prosperous and productive 2009.
