Yes, numbness. Coming and going. That’s the key word this year. We’re numbed by 10 months of one of the most horrendous years in memory. Now let’s add a new administration as equally as unproductive as the last, the economy, unemployment, two wars, health care, flu scare, foreclosures, and the list goes on and on.
If that weren’t enough to exhaust you, brace yourself for the mad dash through the chaotic holiday obstacle course which includes Thanksgiving, Black Friday (busiest shopping day of the year) Christmas, and New Year’s Eve and Day. Sprinkle in high school, college, and pro football, lower temperatures, snow and ice, increasing gas prices, and holiday weight gain, and you suddenly understand the numbness which awaits us as well.
All of those thoughts, past and present, sound a bit negative at first glance. How quickly those thoughts can change as we look forward to the many opportunities to come together as a family, community, a workforce, and a nation to celebrate three of the most emotional holidays of the year. In addition, take a look at the many other possibilities to celebrate with those who mean the most to us. Plan your calendar early and buckle your seat for a very frenzied month!

At the end of this article, I’m going to request that you take a few moments out of your busy day to watch a short video. Many of you will immediately dismiss the thought as you simply don’t have time for that nonsense. You might want to rethink that train of thought.
We all have fears of one sort or another. The fear matters not—it’s how you react to that fear that makes the difference! As a high school student, I would take a failing grade before I would stand in front of the class and make a verbal presentation. Just thinking about speaking in front of my fellow students caused me to sweat, shake, and get sick to my stomach. Rather than facing that fear and attempting to overcome it, I chose to take a failing grade. Today, I speak for a living in front of small groups and massive audiences at major conventions all over North America. I just wished I had addressed that fear much earlier in my career.
To this day, we laugh about that experience and how far he’s come from that initial fear and how well he faced it and overcame it. I’ve been following Stu’s career since that time as we still speak on a weekly, sometimes daily, basis. He’s attained many goals and continues to raise the bar for himself. I’m proud and privileged to call him my friend! You might just soon be attending a national conference where another very shaky rookie walks out on a stage and introduces the keynote speaker as Stu Voeck!
In the spirit of C.A.N.I. (Continuous And Never-ending Improvement), here are this week’s new facts—one for each day of your coming week. Pass them on to others to keep the spirit alive or invite your friends and family to visit our blog where they can also view previous entries.
Fast Company Magazine … which you can always read on line … is reporting about an interesting price war that can mean tremendous savings in your pocket!
That happened just recently twice within a very short period of time. I was invited to keynote the Michigan Recreation and Parks Association Therapeutic Recreation Institute Conference in northern Michigan. A few weeks later, I traveled to Southern Florida on behalf of EBS Healthcare to spend the entire day with the Physical and Occupational Therapists of the West Palm Beach Schools.
I’d like to thank Kristine Kading of the Michigan Recreation and Parks Association Therapeutic Recreation Institute, Jill Parmenter of EBS Healthcare of Pennsylvania, and the West Palm Beach Schools for providing me with truly gratifying experiences and the opportunity to meet such magnificent people. In return I’d like to unofficially proclaim the next 30 days as “Hug a Therapist Month.” You definitely won’t regret it and they assuredly deserve it!
It’s that time of night once again when I find my mind wandering in various directions. It’s just a little after midnight, and I’m sitting on my deck watching the reflection of a bright moon on a very calm lake. A view like this certainly enhances concentration even though the temperature is a little lower than I like.
Visualize, if you will, a typical Friday night high school football game. This one happens to be a contest between the Maryville Spoofhounds (don’t even ask!) and the St. Joseph Benton Cardinals … two rival schools about 42 miles apart situated near the Missouri/Kansas border. It really wasn’t much of a game as Maryville was leading 46-0 as the clock wound down to the final play of the game. It looked like an obvious shut out for the Spoofhounds! Those who may have left early due to the lopsided score may have missed the play of the century!
None of this would have happened if it hadn’t been for the leadership demonstrated by those two coaches and the teamwork displayed by the other 21 players on the field as Matt ran his heart out. I think some future leaders walked off that field that night feeling a little better about themselves and the world in general.
Can you imagine being the parent of a child who was born with no arms and no legs? What kind of future would you think that child would have? Seriously, pause and give that horrid thought some consideration. Disheartening, isn’t it?
Today, Nick’s a preacher, a motivational speaker and the director of Life Without Limbs, an organization for the physically disabled. Who would have guessed 27 years ago that this beautiful limbless baby would one day be someone who would inspire and motivate people from all walks of life, touching lives all over the world?
