Random Thoughts on GoalsAvoid perfection. That last 10% of effort and skill it
takes to achieve it isn't worth the time. You miss 100% of the shots you never take. There are two things to aim at in life: first, to get
what you want, and after that to enjoy it. Only the wisest of mankind
achieve the second. Nothing can add more power to your life than concentrating
all of your energies on a limited set of targets. Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible
into the visible. Write it down. Written goals have a way of transforming
wishes into wants; cant's into cans; dreams into plans; and plans into
reality. Don't just think itink it! Nothing happens unless first we dream. When a goal matters enough to a person, that person
will find a way to accomplish what at first seemed impossible. The most important key to achieving great success is to
decide upon your goal and launch, get started, take action, move. Though no one can go back and make a brand new start,
anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending. Goals are the fuel in the furnace of achievement. Give me a stock clerk with a goal and I'll give you a
man who will make history. Give me a man with no goals and I'll give you
a stock clerk. Life takes on meaning when you become motivated, set goals
and charge after them in an unstoppable manner. Goals are not only absolutely necessary to motivate us.
They are essential to really keep us alive. It is more important to know where you are going
than to get there quickly. Do not mistake activity for achievement. Many people fail in life, not for lack of ability
or brains or even courage but simply because they have never organized
their energies around a goal. If one does not know to which port is sailing, no wind
is favorable. Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you
take your eyes off your goal. The greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim
is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it. The rung of a ladder was never meant to rest upon,
but only to hold a man's foot long enough to enable him to put the other
somewhat higher.
Some of the world's greatest feats were accomplished
by people not smart enough to know they were impossible. Goals are dreams with deadlines. Only as high as I reach can I grow, only as far as I seek
can I go, only as deep as I look can I see, only as much as I dream can
I be. To live is to choose. But to choose well, you must know
who you are and what you stand for, where you want to go and why you want
to get there. All who have accomplished great things have had a great
aim, have fixed their gaze on a goal which was high, one which sometimes
seemed impossible. First, have a definite, clear practical ideal; a goal,
an objective. Second, have the necessary means to achieve your ends; wisdom,
money, materials, and methods. Third, adjust all your means to that end! It must be borne in mind that the tragedy of life does
not lie in not reaching your goal. The tragedy of life lies in having
no goal to reach. If you can find a path with no obstacles, it probably
doesn't lead anywhere. You are never too old to set another goal or to dream
a new dream. The more intensely we feel about an idea or a goal, the
more assuredly the idea, buried deep in our subconscious, will direct
us along the path to its fulfillment.
The major reason for setting a goal is for what it makes
of you to accomplish it. What it makes of you will always be the far greater
value than what you get. Without goals, and plans to reach them, you are like a
ship that has set sail with no destination. When it is obvious that the goals cannot be reached, don't
adjust the goals, adjust the action steps. I can't change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust
my sails to always reach my destination. A goal without a plan is just a wish. By prevailing over all obstacles and distractions, one
may unfailingly arrive at his chosen goal or destination. What is not started today is never finished tomorrow. Every day you spend drifting away from your goals is a
waste not only of that day, but also of the additional day it takes to
regain lost ground. Goals are simply tools to focus your energy in positive
directions, these can be changed as your priorities change, new one added,
and others dropped. If you want to live a happy life, tie it to a goal, not
to people or things. Any person who selects a goal in life which can be fully
achieved, has already defined his own limitations. Reach high, for star lie hidden in your soul. Dream deep,
for every dream precedes the goal. By losing your goal, you have lost your way.
